It's been 58 years since that day. Since the moment in which England conquered the football world. And this anniversary of the 1966 World Cup success, comes just 15 days after yet another lost final for the "three lions". As pleasant as the memory of '66 is, it adds even more pressure now...

It is the only trophy at men's national team level for England. Of course, no one could have thought in the years that had passed since that triumph in the final (4-2) against the West Germans, that more than half a century would have passed and still the English team would not have seen another so big football joy in any of the big competitions.

From that Geoff Hurst hat-trick in the '66 final, we have come to see the 'three lions' at their most successful period, however, they remain without a title.

Gareth Southgate managed to lead his country's representative group to the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the World Cup, as well as to two consecutive European Championship finals, one of which was held at Wembley.

These runs in the most recent major tournaments, make the Southgate's presence at the bench a success story, but again there is a double reading of the situation. There is also this side of the coin that states that the team failed at the 2020 and 2024 Euros, since the result was the same. England reached the source, but the gargling water was drunk by the Italians in London and the Spanish in Berlin.

And so, the fact that on this year's July 30th the English celebrate the 58th anniversary of the conquest of the football world, immediately acquires a different meaning and brings to mind what is happening in the present, with the "three lions" embracing again and their fate. The one who wants them to remain with only one trophy in their history and to mix the feeling of pride with that of bitterness. And that of recognizing efforts and hard work, with that of weakness for critical moments...
